His Last Guinness

This tune is written in memory of an old man who would come to Milly Mulgroo's, my old work, and always have a pint of Guinness. He never kept any company, and was in a badly kept state. I just heard he had died, not realising I had served him his last Guinness.

The Resurrection Of Quasimodo

This tune was written to commemorate my netbook coming back to life. My netbook is nicknamed Quasimodo as the battery doesn't run flush with the body, and it sticks out a little like a hump.

The Pink Turban

The Pink Turban is possibly the best Indian Restaurant I've ever been to. It's on the edge of Wishaw/Waterloo, and I had a monster of a buffet there. A little known place, but not for long – the name is also a sexual euphemism.

The Garage Cat

This tune was named after an incident recently where a friend was worried as her cat hadn't come home all day. Luckily Sox was fine, she was found the next day by a neighbour who had her in their garage overnight.

The Back Grey

The name of this tune was influenced by my new flat in Paisley. Whilst paisley can be a concrete jungle at times, I was expecting the communal area at the back of the close to have grass. Instead, it's a mess of bins, old furniture, fag ends and high blocks surrounding us. This desolate area became ...

Journey Upon The Kinetic Fox

This tune was written to commemorate my first trip to Alton Towers. We took a nightbus and couldn't get a wink of sleep thanks to two passengers in front of us.

Billy Goats Gruff

This was the first tune I had ever written. The title was part of a fascination and in-joke at the time to do with goats and a very peculiar walking stick I got from a friend.

This tuned is named after a lecturer at the University of the West of Scotland. He has been a constant support and source of knowledge over the years to me.

Pipe Major Walter Anderson

This tune is named after Walter Anderson, a piper I have learned a lot from. As well as taking Burntisland through some tough times, he also organises “jams” at his house under the name – The Monday Night Club.

Alec Whitton

This tune is named after the man that gave me my first start at the bagpipes. I have fond memories of Alec struggling to teach me 3 / 4’s. A one band man, he has dedicated his piping life to Burntisland.

The Road to Huntly

This tune was written on a day trip to Huntly in the back of the car. We were staying in a small cottage near Portsoy, the same one we frequented for 7 summers in a row. The sinple, humble nature of the surrounding are reflected in the tune.

Jacob

This tune is named after my dog, and Dad’s new best friend. The bouncy reel can be seen in the worst swagger a dog can ever have. This things back legs have a life of their own and he was the clumsiest, silliest thing you’ve ever seen!

Waiting For The Bus

This tune was composed channelling memories of highland games with my first band, Burntisland, and the times we had to be up to get to some contests. One year, the starting time at Cowal Highland Games meant that I had to get up at 4.30am, get dressed in all the gear and ready for the bus by 5.30am....

Racing For Raja's

This piece was written for a once great takeaway that has fallen by the wayside a little. Every time I go past it, I sigh and think back to those happier times. There used to be three or four of us going in at once, alongside a very peculiar time when a friend and I went in and were both most raveno...

Rain Drenched Ducks

My attempt at an Irish Air – this piece is slow yet uplifting, sad but happy and I feel that this is reflected well in the title of the tune. Rain Drenched Ducks – the only people who enjoy it when it’s bucketing down.
