So, how do titles happen?

I awoke the other day, as one does, except with a mind to call a tune either The Farlington Rocket or the Farlington Fair - why I have no idea. Farlington is a place in Portsmouth, so I know nought about it except that, never been, never before heard of it, what can I say. So, the 'Fair' came first,...

A Helter Skelter Ocean Crossing

Just imagine a helter skelter race across the atlantic, any way you care to try, what a thrill it would be.

Thanks

Cheers for the feedback - one tries all the time, as you know, but sometimes a sequence just clicks and that's it.

The Cocobolo Tree

I have a Robertson/ Henderson set of pipes (as veriified by MR. Sharpe himself, no less, a few years ago when I had a wee repair done) and I love the red hue that is coming through the wood and I intend to get the whole set buffed down to the original patina some day, but I have been looking at some...

Onward - Onward - Onward it goes

Daily Rant - I say everything about a tune stems form the time signature - you can try and twist it, manipulate it, or whatever, but in the end the time signature has you by the short an curly bits, not matter what you do within the tune. If you don't understand what the time signature does, complet...

Aint it funny?

Yes, aint it funny how tunes come through to us from the ethos. I was putting this one to paper at 0530hrs one morning. Once finished, I thought "Easy, eh?" But it's not. is it, folks? At least, the flood gates open sometimes without any warning, but that's another realm of understanding I have left...

Catch Up Number 23

I remember during a training session a very many years ago, on a 10 mile hike, on or two of our party were lagging behind. Our PTI shouted "Oi, number 23, catch up with the others." Number 23 appeared to be tripping over his own feet trying to keep up and this tune gives the impression of catching u...

Ta very much!

Hi, Dan - one does try, as all of us do with composition - sometimes things just click. If we knew how, we could bottle it, eh?

Yesteryear - those reminiscences we all have

OK, so I wrote the second two parts first, but what the hey! I pictured a piper or fiddler or some soloist (accordion) playing the first two parts solo, probably with drum accompaniment, then more pipers and accordions/ fiddlers joining in on the second two parts.

Those Scottish Balladeers

I got to thinking about all the poems and songs written about Scotland while I was looking at some maps of the countryside and mountain ranges and coastline and a wee tune sprung forth, and this is it. I know balladeers really is to do with songs, but many of the poems about Scotland have ended up a...

The Not So Barren Land

Well, folks, this one has been described as "A few different approaches all in one tune, but nothing wrong with that." So, I was just toying with the normal progressively more difficult parts for a tune from start to finish, this tune sprouted extra branches on each part quite effectively and went f...
