The Winter Gales

This morning, I looked out and the fierce gale was evident from the battering of the trees in view. The wind was very blustery and quite a lot of debris was being scattered about. I had to take the dog out in this and even he was not impressed with the weather. A few hours after I came in, I was aga...

Well, funny you should say that guys, I have had the 3rd & 4th part in my PC for a wee while now, but left the two parter as it does stand up on its own so would be good as part of a medley if required.

So, here is the 4 parter - hope it holds up! Happy New Year all!

the simple flow of air

Bagpiping may, to the spectator, appear rather complex. Yet, with a continuous breath of air into a resevoir, channelled to very simple vibrating media, such thunderous sound is released. Quite simple really, don't you think? Yet again, the compexity is in the subtle manipulation of the limitation o...

The Digital Age - jig

Whatever we think of the modernity of the lives we live today, it is undoubtedly the age of all things digital - and how isolated we feel when we lose the use of just one of them.

Eck Static! No way!

Eck is our new driver with the P&D's - and static he will never be. Don't make him laugh, he's an audible and physical hazard - straight up,.

Updated - finished

Someone asked if this tune was finished with just the two parts. I said I was making sure that the 3rd and 4th didn't spoil the effect. I hope I have now achieved a balance

A g gracenote on its own lacks the power, I feel, so the g graenote with the birl lends to the dynamic effect. But hey, if the gracenote alone helps, by all means. I think the g birl is fairly straighforward, though.

Who knows, I may add to it but one doesn't want to get it too reptitive, so I may have to think about it some.

A recent trip to France

In November 2006, my band (Black Watch Army Cadet Force Pipes & Drums) were invited to France to play for some of the Rememberance day parades & take in a few battlefield tours and do a wee bit PR with the locals of Valenciennes. The trip was memorablefor us all for many different reasons. I wrote a...

There's a song here, or maybe not.

I remember - vaguely - of Val Doonican singing about a spider that came down and sat beside somebody, who proceeded to swallow the spider and then the spider wriggled inside her, or something just as zany- told you it was vague. Then I think he sang about the nursery rhyme 'Old woman who lived in a ...

Inspiration from a photo

I took this photo - less resolution for the website - as one of the first photos from my new digital camera in 2004. I was always hankering to write a tune about it and here it is

Very unpredictable/ changeable

Fickle means a lot of things - Unpredictable, Changeable, Erratic, Indecisive. Gae in Scots means Very, so Gae Fickle - Very Changeable or very Erratic. While this jig is far from indecisive, I think the idea of Fickleness is portrayed. And Gae Fickle Sounds a lot nicer than Very Unpredictable, eh? ...
