the dog rose

The very tenacious dog rose bush in my garden. Moving it the other day to a new position was hard work.

Trio of tunes for the Gaelic Whisky's - 3

This morning I rose at about 0630 - in anticipation of the week ahead, who knows. Anyway, I got onto the internet and had a wee play with Bagpipe Player also - as I tend to do. Remember how I was saying titles are hard to come by? Well, I was. Anyway, I came across a site for Gaelic Whisky - http://...

Middle Earth

The other day I picked up a second hand copy of the book - Lord of the Rings - with over 1100 pages - an epic book and truly epic trilogy of films. I did not set out to compose an epic jig, but this does feel like a tune that is ever flowing, relentless, as the film depicts. I tried it for sight rea...

King's Course, Gleneagles

the title is from a photo I have of the King's Course, Gleneagles, taken in 1994 (Bell's Scottish Open) of an empty course at sunset, looking across to the hotel from the back of one of the greens.

Fear an eich pottery

I collect pottery, among other things - especially Isle of Lewis pottery 'Fear an eich'. It's a fairly delicate pottery with earth colours and patterns - mostly. So I have written a wee reel to celebrate this traditional style Scottish Craft - hope you like it.

those men on the lonely trawlers

For a good few years I have thought the fishermen of Scotland have had a raw deal from EU and governmental bureaucracy, yet those still plying their living on the seas around our Scottish coast deserve better, I feel. Anyway, I composed this wee tune that I felt still portrays these hardy folk, ther...

the title says it all

Hi, here we are again with another offering, this time a 4/4 march - it's a wee tune to celebrate the end of the year, no particular year, but the end and the beginning of a new one - you'll never guess the title - surprised myself with it's subtlety! I think the tune is more original, though and ho...

Mrs. Hardwicke's Candy Shop

My Gran, now long departed, used to give me a few bob (pre 1972) to nip to the sweet shop at the end of the street - I would gaze in for a while, trying to decide what to get each time. Not sure of the name of the shop after all these years, but it was something like the title. Please comment if you...

Finn the sailor

Now and again, we all come across someone who leaves an impression upon our life. Over 26 years ago a guy called Finn did just that, although it wasn't until I composed this wee march which reminded me slightly of a sailors hornpipe that his memory came back to me - so here's the tune - we play it i...

The Rowan Piper

In Scotland, the downpipe from the guttering on the side of the houses is known as the rowan pipe, and often the guttering and downpipe are referred to as the same, the rowan's. I have composed a wee tune about a tradesman in our area who, among many other odd jobs, cleans the guttering, AKA rowan's...

Little Miss Greenwood

This wee tune was composed during Army Cadet Force Pipes & Drums training at Redford Barracks, Edinburgh, back in 2007. The title was inspired by Miss Sandie Greenwood of the West Lowland Battalion ACF Pipes & Drums, who liked this tune from the outset, even when I was tinkering with the parts early...

Ower the Forth

The other day, I was crossing the Forth Road Bridge, which gives rise to a clear view of the Forth Bridge. I was so pleased to see that much of the scaffolding on the bridge that had blighted the view had been removed. I therefore gave title to this nice wee 6/8 which I composed not 2 hours later.

The Ale House Revellers

I have for some time imagined a good old shindig at an olde worlde ale huse, perhaps a wedding party or Christmas celebration or some such. Now, I have got down to composing this jisg to depict the picture. Imagine 18th Century working folk having a good old time - captured in a painting perhaps. We...
