Not I and I don't think I have ever seen it written. I don't think I would like to retrain my muscle memory for a different doubling movement.....
I probably adopted it from one of the first world war pipers. The design behind it is that when a fellow is bridging the C with his little finger down on the D position, so he has lots of stability on the chanter, he can roll that GCE doubling, and maintain the beautiful tone on the C note. It works well too, from D to D because the D can be held solidly for both D’s.
